The Finishing Touch

In this photo the men in our family are gathered around a smoldering bonfire at sunset as potatoes cook in the hot ashes.

Cooking potatoes in this way was the idea of our children who spent time in Russian orphanages. They have strong memories of this ritual. In fact, Cassandra revealed to us this week that every time she's smelled a bonfire here in America during the past ten years she's been taken back to those special times and treats in her homeland. Smells can evoke such powerful memories!

We combined the delicious, charred potatoes with grilled steak--a perfect Russian/American finish to our perfect week together at the lake.
